Kaladkarin Gets a Different Kind of High in Bali

This is why I go through the painstaking process of editing/obsessing over video clips — so that I can relive breathtaking experiences such as this one. 🙂

Given that we were only there for the weekend, the 6 of us trooped over to Timbis Beach in Bali to try out paragliding. If you want to challenge your fear of heights, then you have to try this — you’ll literally feel the wind beneath your feet. My tandem instructor said that sometimes, it was even possible to touch the clouds (!). If you’re lucky, your instructor will even let you control the chute — I got a crash-course (no pun intended) in navigating the chute left and right, up and down — this is the type of high that stays with you. A definite must-try when in Bali.

Kaladkarin Goes For a Spin in Pagudpud

13 June 2010,  Bangui Windmills, Ilocos

With Ate Ting, Ikay, Ralph & Alex

This trip’s moral lesson: The quickest way to have a embarassing-stories-about-you marathon is to get your friends and your sister & niece together. Spell L-A-G-L-A-G.

Casualty Assessment:

  • Bus to Pagudpud/Laoag – Php 700 (1-way)
  • 1 bedroom at Punta Azul (for max 3 persons) – Php 3,500
  • Van tour of Pagudpud ( Cape Bojeador Lighthouse, Bangui Windmills, Patapat Viaduct, Agua Grande, Paraiso ni Anton, Kabigan falls) – Php 2000
    * You can ask the resort to hook you up with a tour operator. There’s also an option for a tricycle tour, but in long distances, that might not be fun. =P)
  • Sandboarding & 4×4 ride at the Ilocos Sand Dunes (highly recommended!) – Php 2k-2,500.

kaladkarin goes surfing in bali

Of course, I wasn’t going to let a trip to Bali pass by without trying to catch a wave! I signed up for surf classes on our last day, and I have nothing but praises for the Pro Surf School in Kuta. Kudos!

Thanks Errol for the pictures! =) I look funny when I put on my game face — that’s why I resolve to not take myself so seriously. Nyahaha.

Finally, an answer

A friend posted pics of their climb to Kota Kinabalu, and again I found myself grasping for an answer for that age-old question for any climber — why do I climb?
I’ve always thought it was because I can, but having more time to think about it, it’s more like because I need to believe that I can. I need to know that amidst all the chaos,  I still have a full grasp on what’s truly beautiful.

I climb because I need to be reminded of how small I really am, because sometimes I forget.

kaladkarin hits hk+macau with ke

(this shall henceforth be known as the trip wherein ke and i survived with our cellphone cams. bow.)

passport? check. usd? check. camera? check. memory card?… uh-oh. houston, we have a problem.

after giving ourselves a serious smack in the head, we pushed on with our sightseeing of eventful HK and pretty macau, armed only with our nokia cams. i think we’ve identified 1001 sights spread across the wax museum, disneyland and macau that would have been kick-ass, only if we’ve caught it with nothing less than a point-and-shoot. i’d like to think that the pictures were crappy this time… because we’re definitely coming back! 🙂 (ke, one thing though — do we have a picture with crisel?! eep!)

Kaladkarin hangs loose in SG

Sporty is definitely the word to describe weekend #2 at Singapore. After spending the whole Sat afternoon playing badminton at Woodlands, we whisked ourselves to the Dairy Farm Quarry at Bukit Timah on Sunday to join a fundraising by the Bundokeros.

It was nice to get reoriented with the life on the trail, even for just a swift glimpse of who I used to be. Hopefully, that person is not forever lost. Maybe this is the part where I rediscover her.

Kaladkarin Gets Charmed by Bicol

The best thing about this picture? Not the sun. Not the beach. It's sharing the shot with friends as awesome as these guys.

There was no way I was leaving the land of glorious beaches without one last trip. Since Jan already had a trip set with her high-school++ friends, Alex, Ralph & I invited ourselves to Jan’s hometown for the Holy Week break (hehe =P).

8 hours on the bus + 1.5 hours on the back of a pickup + 2 hours on a boat = sore butts. By noon, we find ourselves arriving at Caramoan, with a welcome lunch waiting for us prepared by Caramoan’s parish priest. After several bouts of conversation about boat trips, islands, sharks and malunggay, we proceeded to a house in a barrio by the seaside to settle. It was nice to be reminded of the trips I had before HP happened — where electricity and a shower were luxuries, but nothing could beat the sights and calm. Roselyn, Jan’s HS buddy, was an awesome cook and led the troops in the kitchen. After dinner, we literally laid down on the road right outside the house, chatting the night away under the stars with beers at hand. This is the life.
